Walk Bookings FAQ_category
What is the Walk Booking System?
It is a system which enables Northallerton Ramblers Members to book (and unbook) themselves on a group walk.
Why do we use a booking system?
It makes booking on simpler both for walk leaders, who previously had to be available to answer phone calls from members, and for the members themselves. It provides control over the number of walkers (usually limited to a maxium of 20), and if necessary allows walk leaders to specify a limit lower than the normal group maximum due to (for example) safety considerations or car parking limitations.
Who can book on a walk?
You must be registered to use the system. All Northallerton Ramblers members or associate members are automatically registered and can access the system using their Ramblers membership number. Members of other Ramblers groups will need to contact the membership secretary at
If you are not a member of Ramblers you are most welcome to join us as a guest. Please contact the membership secretary at
How do I use the booking system ?
The booking page is accessed via the link on the home page or from the Walk Program page on this website. The booking window is normally from 18:00 on the Monday prior to the walk and closes at 21:00 on the Wednesday, although some special walks may have an extended booking window. Booking for pub walks will often close 3 or 4 days before the date of the walk to allow booking of meals.
The best approach is to log into the booking system well before 18:00 to display the booking page. If you are using a mobile, then please do first ensure that you close any previous copies of the booking page that you may have left open. The upcoming walks will be shown on a yellow background. The walks will automatically become bookable at 18:00 but you will need to refresh the page first..
As soon as it is 18:00, click on the on-page 'Refresh/Update' button (do not use the browser page refresh button). In the 'Walk Programme' table the available walks will then be shown in green, and you will see a button labelled 'Add Me' against each walk. Click on the appropriate button to make your booking. The walk will the appear in the 'My Booked Walks' table to confirm the booking.
If the walks have not turned green, then you have tried to access the system too early - just click on the 'Refresh/Upload' button again. This may happen if the clock displayed on your device is fast. On a mobile this should not be an issue, but on a PC the clock may no longer be accurately synchronized if the device has been off for a day or more. You can force synchronization via 'settings'.
Please do not use the browser back button, or the browser refresh button, when using the booking system. After booking please close the booking page.
How soon after the booking window opens do I have to book my walk to be sure of getting a place?
The earlier you book the more chance you have of securing a place. Popular walks can book up very quickly after booking opens at 18:00
I can't use the booking system at 18:00, how can I get booked on?
If you won't be able to book yourself on, then you can ask a trusted friend or relative to access the booking system for you. You just need to let them know your Ramblers ID and they can make the booking on your behalf.
What is the best device to use for the booking system?
The system can be used with more or less any device, desktop PC, laptop, tablet or smart phone. If you should experience any problems with using the booking system then please contact the site administrator at
What can I do if I accidentally book on a walk?
When you book on a walk, the 'Add Me' button disappears from the booking table but the 'Remove Me' button appears in the 'My Booked Walks' table – simply click this button. You will be asked to confirm the action.
What should I do if I realise that I can't now come on a walk I am booked on?
If the booking window is still open (normally up to 21:00 the day before the walk) use the 'Remove Me' button in the upper table. If booking has closed, including if it is on the day of walk, please be sure to contact the walk leader to let them know. The booking will be removed from the 'My Booked Walks' table.
How can I ensure my partner and myself can book on the same walk?
Joint members can book two places simultaneously. When booking, a joint member will be offered a choice of two booking buttons, one to book just themselves and the other to book themselves and their partner. The offer to book both members on the same walk is dependent on there being at least two slots available. If there is only one slot available, or if your partner is already booked onto a walk on that day, the joint booking button will not be displayed.
Please be aware that if you change your mind and have joint booking enabled, you will have to 'unbook' both partners individually - removing one person does not remove the other.
I want a specific co-leader. How can I ensure they are booked on the walk?
The walk leader can pre-book a co-leader (who would normally be the back marker). A button labelled 'Co-Leader' will be visible to the walk leader, which allows them to select the co-leader before the booking system opens.
I have a co-leader pre-booked. How can I book my partner on the walk as well?
You can’t, unless your partner is also the back marker of course. They will have to book on as normal when the booking system opens.
Occasionally, I notice that more that one person is booked on a walk prior to the booking window opening. Why?
This can happen for two reasons. The walk leader can specify and pre-book a co-leader, and guest walkers can be pre-booked for their first walk with us.
I’ve forgotten my Ramblers Membership Number. What should I do?
You can find this on any correspondence from Ramblers. Alternatively, if you are a member of the Northallerton Group you can contact the membership secretary at
I don't have any device that I can use to access the booking system. What can I do?
If you have a friend or relative who can access the booking system for you, you could let them know your Ramblers ID and ask them to book on your behalf. Otherwise, contact the walk leader.
If the walk I want to go on is already full can I just ring the walk leader?
No. Based on advice from Ramblers, Northallerton Ramblers committee members have decided on the maximum number who should be on any walk, and walk leaders have been told not to accept anyone over that limit. If a walk is fully booked, it is worth trying again later to see if any space has become available, as walkers do occasionally drop out before booking closes on the Wednesday evening.
