Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the questions people ask about walking with our group. If you have any further queries please contact our membership secretary at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Where do you walk?
Any public footpaths within a reasonable drive of Northallerton. We normally walk in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors countryside and sometimes offer urban walks of special interest.

When do you walk?
Our main walking programme is on Thursday of each week when two or three walks are offered. We normally assemble by 9.45 a.m. to be ready to walk at 10.00 a.m, although the start time may vary on occasion; please check the walk details. During the summer months there is also a Tuesday evening programme of pub walks. We also organise short breaks of 3 or 4 nights somewhere in the UK once or twice a year as well as a week long walking holiday once a year. Full details of our walking programme appear on this website.

How far will the walk be?
On Thursdays, we aim to offer walkers a choice of walks, differing in both location and difficulty. One up to 8 miles and others between 8 and 12 miles. Tuesday evening pub walks are around 5 miles.

Will I be fit enough?
A good level of general fitness is sufficient. Returning walkers or members new to walking may find it better to choose easier walks to begin with and then progress as stamina builds.

How hard are the walks?
A description of each walk appears on the website. Our walks are graded Easy, Leisurely, Moderate and Strenuous. Our grading is generally in line with the descriptions used by the Ramblers [click here ], although walks graded as 'Easy' will normally be over a range of types of path and may well include stiles.  Please contact the walk leader with any specific queries about a particular walk

What should I wear?
Sturdy walking boots and socks, a seasonal hooded jacket/fleece, trousers (avoiding denim – not good if it gets wet). Bring waterproofs and you may want to also bring other items such as a hat and gloves, especially in winter.

What should I bring?
A day rucksack containing sufficient food and drink to take you through the day. On day walks we typically have a drinks mid morning and stop for lunch around midday. You will need to carry enough water taking into account the temperature and length of walk. Bring your own first aid kit (see the link in the main menu for the suggested safety checklist) and any medication you normally require. In summer it is a good idea to carry sun cream.

How do I join a walk?
All our walks require advance booking; please see the website for details.

How do I get to the start?
The starting point of the walk, including the grid reference and postcode, are included in the information on the walks programme, together with any car parking details. Members usually travel to walks by car and we encourage members to car share where practicable.

Will I need a map?
Only if you wish. The walk leader will have a map as these are guided walks.

Can I bring children?
Please check with the walk leader first as the walks are planned with adults in mind and the terrain and pace may not be suitable for children. The adult that accompanies a child/children is responsible for their safety and behaviour.

Can I bring my dog?
No, dogs are not allowed on Northallerton Group Walks, due to the risk of encountering farm animals, particularly cattle. Registered assistance dogs may be allowed on some walks if conditions allow. Please contact the leader before the walk to discuss issues that might arise.

Can I try a walk before joining Northallerton Ramblers?
Please do! You are welcome to join us for up to three walks after which we hope you would join Ramblers. Details of our walk programme appear on the website.

How do I join Northallerton Ramblers?
Ramblers Association headquarters deal with all membership enquiries. You can join Ramblers online, with easy payment options, at www.ramblers.org.uk . You can specify which local Ramblers group you wish to join. If you do not make a specific request, you will be assigned to a group nearest your postcode.

Are there any extra benefits from Ramblers?
There are discounts on clothing and equipment from walking shops. Members can join any Ramblers walks anywhere in the country, and other local groups will walk in this area. Details of all walks run by Ramblers can be found on the Ramblers Website.

What else do Ramblers do?
Ramblers is a campaigning charity for protecting our National network of footpaths. Each group has a Footpath Officer who deals with all footpath issues. In our group this covers most of the Hambleton area.
